Acharitable, happy-go-lucky man (Salman Khan) embarks on a mission to meet a generous princess (Sonam Kapoor) who helps people. Directed by Sooraj Barjatya, the fi lm features Salman, Sonam Kapoor in the lead role and Anupam Kher, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Armaan Kohli, Deepak Dobriyal and Swara Bhaskar in supporting roles.
Industry sources tell us that record number of screens were booked for PRDP – 4,800-5,200 in India and 1,000-1,200 overseas. Normally, big-ticket fi lms are released on around 3500-4000 screens in the domestic market and 200-500 screens outside the country. However, the fi lm has been hugely publicised since Salman Khan and Barjatya have teamed up after a decade and half, and the team wants to make the most of it,” a source says. The fi lm’s spokesperson confi rms the story and says, “Yes, it is one of the biggest releases in India as well as the overseas market.”
Salman Khan had spoken about his Diwali release, PRDP as “one of the most expensive fi lms” that he has worked in. Supplementing his statement, a unit hand reveals that the fi lm’s makers have spent a whopping amount on the set lighting – around Rs 15 crore. “Director Sooraj Barjatya is known to spend lavishly on set design and since his upcoming fi lm revolves around a royal family, he made it as opulent as it could get. Lights were an important element of the set design and the cost of illumination over the 258-day schedule has come to somewhere between Rs 13-15 crore,” adds the unit source. The fi lm’s budget is pegged to be around Rs 90 crore.
Released on 12th November, 2015, PRDP continues to bring in cash for the makers of the fi lm. The fi lm completed its three-week run at the domestic box offi ce on Thursday with a net income of more than Rs 206 crore.
At the worldwide box offi ce, PRDP has grossed more than Rs 400 crore and is now the fi fth highest grosser of all time. And now, the fi lm is aiming to shatter the worldwide box offi ce collection records of Shah Rukh Khan’s “Chennai Express”. It needs to earn more than Rs 423 crore to beat the lifetime box offi ce earnings of “Chennai Express”.
PRDP is Salman’s second fi lm of this year to cross Rs 200 crore mark with its net income in India. The fi lm was expected to earn more than Rs 300 crore from just domestic box offi ce, but the collection was not up to the mark compared to Salman’s last fi lm “Bajrangi Bhaijaan”.
However, the collection of the fi lm will decline in its fourth week due to new releases. Nevertheless, PRDP is the second highest grosser of this year and the seventh highest grosser of all time.
